SPL PL90_3 replacement: what to use now that it's discontinued

Last orders 1 April 2024 · status: discontinued · pin-to-pin drop-in available

The ams OSRAM SPLPL90_3 was discontinued with last orders on 1 April 2024. If your board still carries one, this page tells you exactly what your options are — including the one where the answer is "redesign".

The short answer

The pin-to-pin replacement for SPL PL90_3 is PLD905-75W-P: a 75 W, 905 nm pulsed laser diode in a two-pin plastic package with silver lead frame. It drops into the same footprint. ams OSRAM's own suggested part, SPL PL90AT03, is rated 30 W — less than half.

Status of the original part

ams OSRAM discontinued the SPL PL90_3 under product discontinuation notice OS-PDN-2023-066. The dates that matter for your purchasing plan:

  • Last orders: 1 April 2024. New purchase orders are no longer accepted.
  • Last deliveries: 1 October 2024. Factory supply ended on that date.
  • Ordering code Q62702P5353 is marked "discontinued — not planned for new design" on the ams OSRAM product page.
  • Distributor remainder stock may still be listed (Mouser, DigiKey), but it is one-time inventory. Once it sells through, there is no resupply.

If you are holding remainder stock, treat this page as the plan for the batch after it. If you are starting a new design, do not design in the PL90_3 — it has no factory supply path.

The three options, compared

All figures below are from the published datasheets: the ams OSRAM product pages for the SPL PL90_3 and SPL PL90AT03, and the LumeLiDAR PLD905 datasheet.

Beam divergence values follow each manufacturer's datasheet convention; the axes are close but not identical (28° / 10° bare against the original's 25° / 9°). The exact far-field match is confirmed on samples against your receiver optics, not on paper.

The three options, graded honestly

1. Pin-to-pin drop-in — PLD905-75W-P

The shortest path. Same package, footprint and pinout; your board does not change. The position has been running in volume production on a European in-vehicle rangefinder platform, so this is not a paper claim.

What it does not settle by itself: peak output under your drive conditions. That is what the sample units are for.

2. The OSRAM-suggested part — SPL PL90AT03

ams OSRAM's own cross-reference points here. It is a working part — but it is rated 30 W against your 75 W. If your design has the headroom and your range budget absorbs it, it is a legitimate path with no requalification of a second supplier.

If you need the full 75 W, it does not hold. That is the gap option 1 fills.

3. Redesign — sometimes the right answer

If your board is at end-of-life anyway, if volumes do not justify a qualification run, or if your system has outgrown 905 nm — say, you need eye-safe range that 1550 nm provides — a redesign beats forcing a drop-in.

We will tell you when we think this is the answer, even though it costs us the order. See 1550 nm eye-safe sources if that is where you land.

What pin-to-pin does and does not cover

"Pin-to-pin" is a mechanical and electrical claim. It means:

  • The package outline, footprint and pinout match — no layout change
  • Peak wavelength, peak power class and pulse rating match the PL90_3's published values
  • The solder profile follows the same plastic-package handling rules

It does not mean the optical output is identical on your board. Peak output depends on your drive current, pulse width and thermal environment. The datasheet numbers match; the measurement that counts is yours — which is why the first order ships with units for your own bench.

How a replacement gets qualified

  1. You send the part number — SPL PL90_3 — with your annual quantity and drive conditions.
  2. We confirm the position in writing: pin-to-pin, what matches, what needs bench verification.
  3. We ship two to five samples so you can measure spectrum, peak power and rise time on your own test bench.
  4. We quote production volume once your sign-off is in, and hold the agreed lead time.

Frequently asked

Is PLD905-75W-P really pin-to-pin with SPL PL90_3?

Yes. The package, footprint and pinout match the original part, so the board does not change. The position has been running in volume production on a European in-vehicle rangefinder platform. What pin-to-pin does not settle is optical output — that is confirmed per unit against your drive conditions, and the first order includes units for your own bench.

Can I still buy SPL PL90_3 anywhere?

Possibly, for now. The part was discontinued under ams OSRAM product discontinuation notice OS-PDN-2023-066 with last orders on 1 April 2024 and last deliveries on 1 October 2024. Distributors may still hold remainder stock, but it is one-time: once it sells through, the part is gone.

Why does ams OSRAM point to a 30 W part as the replacement?

The replacement listed on the ams OSRAM product page is SPL PL90AT03, which is rated 30 W peak against the PL90_3's 75 W. If your design has that much power headroom, it is a valid path. If you need the full 75 W, it does not hold — that is exactly the gap the PLD905-75W-P drop-in fills.

What do I need to send to get samples?

The part number you are replacing, your annual quantity, and your drive conditions — pulse width, repetition rate and peak current. We ship two to five samples so you can measure spectrum, peak power and rise time on your own bench before any production commitment.
